Overview
Somalia stands at a critical juncture, facing an escalating climate crisis that threatens its people, economy, and fragile stability. Recurrent and intense climate disasters, from devastating droughts to flash floods, have plunged millions into humanitarian crises, exacerbating food insecurity and displacing communities. At Amilen Africa, we believe the path to resilience lies not in reacting to crises but in anticipating them. Our solution, the Anticipatory Action Forecasting System (AAFS), is a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower Somalia with the tools needed to get ahead of these disasters.
The AAFS is a sophisticated, data-driven system built on the pillars of technology and community partnership. We integrate real-time data from satellites and meteorological stations with powerful AI and machine learning models to forecast extreme weather events with unprecedented accuracy. This is more than just a weather app; it's a predictive analytics engine that analyzes complex patterns in rainfall, river levels, and soil moisture to issue automated early warnings.
Our project's core mission is to transition from a reactive to a proactive disaster management approach. By developing an integrated, scalable, and sustainable system, we will significantly reduce the time it takes for warnings to reach vulnerable communities. We are building a centralized data-sharing platform to enhance coordination among all stakeholders—from government agencies and humanitarian organizations to local communities. This ensures that everyone, from the top down, is working from the same playbook, enabling pre-emptive actions like aid pre-positioning and early evacuations.
The AAFS will focus on the most vulnerable regions of Somalia, including the Shabelle and Juba River Basins, as well as the coastal areas prone to cyclones. We’ll work directly with local communities to ensure warnings are delivered in local languages and culturally appropriate formats, empowering them to take charge of their own safety. Our approach is designed for long-term impact, with a commitment to integrating the system into Somalia's national disaster management framework. By building local capacity and ensuring institutional adoption, we are laying the foundation for a future where communities are not just survivors of climate change but are resilient to it. The AAFS is a tangible step toward a more secure, prosperous, and sustainable Somalia.
What we did
- Forecasting of floods and droughts using satellite and weather-station data with AI
- Early warnings delivered through local channels and in local languages
- Focus on the Shabelle and Juba river basins and cyclone-prone coastal areas
- Shifts disaster response from reacting to acting before the event
