Overview
The Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS) keeps some of Kenya's most important natural-resource data. Amilen Africa is its technical partner in modernising how that data is stored, shared and collected.
We designed and launched the DRSRS geoportal, where ministries and the public can discover, view and download national resource data and remote-sensing feeds. Behind it sits a new central PostgreSQL/PostGIS database for vector layers, satellite images, aerial survey grids and historical archives, organised using standard data descriptions that follow Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) rules.
For the field, we set up mobile data collection on a customised ODK platform, connected straight to the database, to support the twice-yearly crop yield surveys and ecosystem ground-truthing. We also demonstrated a proof-of-concept online ecosystem monitoring system to DRSRS leadership and technical teams.
What we did
- National geoportal for discovering and sharing resource data
- Standard metadata, feature catalogues and sharing rules based on OGC standards
- Central PostgreSQL/PostGIS geodatabase with archives and multi-year layers
- ODK mobile data collection linked to the database for field surveys
